On February 27, 2018, tug of war competitions were held as part of the 30th Moscow Student Sports Games. The MSSG are held annually among teams of higher education institutions in Moscow and Moscow Region accredited by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. The tug of war tournament was organized by the regional public organization "Moscow Tug of War Federation" (Moskovskaya federatsiya peretyagivaniya kanata) and the Moscow regional branch of the All-Russian public organization "Russian Student Sports Union" (Rossiysky studenchesky sportivny soyuz).

The competition was held between teams of 17 leading Moscow universities in two disciplines:
1. Men's team: a main lineup of 8 people and 4 substitutes. The total weight of the main lineup no more than 720 kg;
2. Mixed team: a main lineup of 8 people, of whom 4 men and 4 women, plus 4 substitutes, of whom 2 men and 2 women. The total weight of the main lineup no more than 600 kg.

Among the men's teams, the winners were representatives of the Russian State University of Physical Education, Sport, Youth and Tourism (GTsOLIFK), second place went to students of the Moscow State Social University, and the team of the National University of Oil and Gas "Gubkin University" rounded out the top three.

In the mixed teams category, the athletes of the Russian State Agrarian University – Moscow Timiryazev Agricultural Academy came first, silver went to representatives of the Moscow University of Railway Engineering, and bronze was won by the Russian State University of Physical Education, Sport, Youth and Tourism (GTsOLIFK).
