European Championships 2005. Cento, Italy
Swedish athletes struck gold only on the last day of the European Championships, which ended in the small town of Cento (Italy).
Most remarkably, it was not only the red-bearded descendants of the Vikings who took an active part, leaning on the rope with a combined weight of 720 kg, but also their fair-haired sisters, who, admittedly, turned out to be two hundred kilograms lighter.
At the international tug of war competition held in the Italian town of Cento, eleven sets of medals were contested.
On the first day, gold went to athletes from four countries. Only the English team managed to win twice.

In one more category, 640 kg, the burly Swiss men pulled best of all: in the final their rope proved stronger than the Irish one.
The Russian athletes, making their debut at this tournament, did not finish high in the standings. The first attempt fell flat, and the Russians ended up far from the podium. Still, the competition proved very useful for them, all the more so because an agreement was reached on a master class that Italian experts will hold especially for our national team. So everything is still ahead of them.
